ToggleWe are very pleased that you are interested in mapping, a modern multimedia projection technique used on non-standard surfaces – from building facades and cars to complex architectural structures. Mapping, also known as 3D projection or video mapping, is the art of combining light, sound, and animation into a single spectacle that can move, surprise, and tell stories.
In this article, we will comprehensively describe the mapping creation process, the stages of production, how it is implemented in our studio Lune.xyz – luminator.pl, and how much such an implementation costs depending on the scale of the project.
What is mapping?
Mapping is the projection of a video image onto an irregular surface, adjusted to perfectly reflect its shapes, structure, and space. This creates a three-dimensional effect, an illusion, and even interactivity.
Most commonly used in:
- outdoor performances,,
- cultural events,
- product launches,
- brand promotions,
- art installations,
light festivals.
The stages of mapping production – what does it look like step by step?
At the Lune.xyz – luminator.pl studio, we approach each project individually and comprehensively. The entire process is divided into three main production stages:
1) technology (projectors),
2) content
3) logistics and additional elements.
I. Technology – equipment and infrastructure
The first step is to select the right projection equipment that will enable the planned artistic vision to be correctly reproduced on a given object.
1. Projectors
- Power (lumens): Selected depending on size, color, and projection distance.
- For an area of 8m x 5m, we need at least 8000 lumens.
- For dark walls (e.g., brick), we increase the power to 10,000–12,000 lumens for the same surface area of 8 m x 5 m.
- For large projections (25 m wide) – projectors with a power of 25,000 lumens and above.
- Resolution:
- Standard projectors: HD or Full HD..
- For large projects: 4K – higher cost, but better quality..
- Lenses:
- Selecting the appropriate projection distances, determining the appropriate lenses for the projector.
- Wide-angle lenses allow for the presentation of animations from greater distances, but they also require more light, so the image is slightly darker.
2. Sound system (optional)
If you need to integrate music, voice-overs, or sound effects, we provide:
- outdoor speakers,
- sound mixers,
- microphones,
- wiring.
3. Infrastructure
- Towers (poles) – for mounting projectors in public places (e.g., town squares) to prevent people from blocking the image.
- Auxiliary lighting – e.g., LEDs, which enhance the projection effect.
- Projector structures – stands, trusses, tripods.
- Power supply – power generators in case of no access to a permanent power source.
II. Content – creating animations and visual content
This is the most important and creative part of the project. Mapping is not only about technology, but above all about content and storytelling.
Forms of animation that can be presented on mapping — together we choose the technique we want to use to show on mapping:
- Animation 3D
- Creating a three-dimensional model of a building.
- Realistic shadows, depth, explosions, visual effects.
- Working with specialized 3D programs.
- The most advanced and time-consuming form.
- Animation 2D
- It is based on flat graphics and illustrations.
- A stylized, graphic, often artistic form of communication.
- Less expensive and faster to implement.
- Animation with AI
- Generating AI images and scenes based on prompts.
- Then, animation of these graphics.
- The most economical option while maintaining high visual quality.
Stages of content creation:
- Project analysis
- Inspection of the site, collection of documentation (photos, plans).
Discussion of artistic and communication goals.
- Concept development
- Script – independently or in collaboration with the client.
Storyboard, concept sketches, visual inspirations.
Choice of graphic style.
- Production
- Creating 3D models (if required).
- Animation, integration of graphic elements, special effects.
- Synchronization with music, voice-over, effects.
- Postproduction
- Final edit.
- Rendering in final resolution.
Tests and corrections.
III. Additional elements and logistics
Mapping is not only projection and animation—it is also the organization of the entire project..
Additional elements for bark valuation are necessary for the implementation of the event:
- Transportation, accommodation, technical rehearsals for the band.
Technical support – projector operators, installers, electricians.
Municipal permits – approvals for installation, street closures, etc.
Music licenses – both free and commercial.
Security for the venue – e.g., blackout windows with foil, foam, cardboard.
3D model of the building – e.g., obtained from a drone or photogrammetric scan.
Equipment protection – in the case of installations lasting several days.
Power supply from a generator if there is no access to a permanent power source.
Rain covers – if the weather is unsuitable.
Sample mapping valuations
a) Small mapping – e.g., a car or a small wall (8 m x 4 m)
Element | Cost (USD) |
Technology (1 projector) | 500 – 1000$ |
Content (1 min animation) | 4000 – 5000$ |
Access, installation | 500 – 1000$ |
Total | ~5500 – 6500$ |
b) Medium mapping – e.g., 24 m x 3 m (building, stage)
Element | Cost (USD) |
Technology (2–3 projectors) | 1400 – 2200$ |
Content (3 minutes of mixed animation) | 12 300$ |
Logistics, assembly | 1300 – 2200$ |
Total | ~15 000 – 18 000$ |
c) Large mapping – e.g., 40 m facade + 4K animation
Element | Cost (USD) |
Technology (4K, powerful projectors) | 11 000 – 17 000$ |
Content (10 minutes, advanced) | 32 800 – 41 000$ |
Logistics + licenses + electricity | 2 000 – 3 500$ |
Total | ~46 000 – 61 000$ |
How to quickly estimate the budget for your idea?
- Specify the dimensions of the projection and the color/texture of the surface.
- Consider the length of the animation (1-3-10 min) and the style (3D, 2D, AI, or a mix).
- Take into account the conditions of the location (darkness, distances, permits, access).
- Based on this, select the power of the projectors (rule: width in meters ≈ thousands of lumens + 20–50% reserve for difficult conditions).
- Add up the three baskets: technology + content + logistics.
Compare with examples of costs:
small (ok. 5500 – 6500 USD), medium (ok. 15 000–18 000 USD), large (ok. 46 000 – 61 000 USD).
If you need an accurate quote, we will prepare it after a short conversation and analysis of the location. The more we know at the beginning (date, place, photos of the venue, requirements for content and sound), the more accurately and quickly we can provide a budget and schedule.
